‘CUT SHAPES NOT CULTURE’ ZINE.
This was the first piece of work where I felt that I had truly started to understand my visual identity, although it wasn’t fully developed, I feel that it is important to share the beginning of my visual journey.
The brief for this project was to create either a perzine or a brand zine, drawing inspiration from the brand ‘TSPTR’, which widely uses American counterculture as their brand narrative.
I chose to create a perzine, which delved into the world of electronic dance culture, which is rooted personally for me, as I grew up surrounded by it and it is the placeholder for my favourite mixture of music. Zines are supposed to be radical and subcultural in it’s whole totality, which is exactly how mine was conveyed.
The task that I resulted in partaking, was creating a perzine (a zine that was completely personal to me). I pulled my initial inspiration from my guitar, which was the first way that I was able to create my own music besides from my voice, which lead me to explore my own musical subculture.
This zine creation allowed me to complete extensive research and convey it through mainly visual communication.
